wedding season 2.0

wedding season part 2 wedding season part 2.1wedding season part 2.2 Dress: J.Crew. Heels: Zara (last summer). Jewelry: David Yurman Bracelet; Taara Earrings (C/O).

Wedding season continues – this time in Kansas City!  My new Taara Jewelry earrings and J.Crew dress that has been sitting pretty in the back of my closet for the past month made their debut.  Following a brief ceremony which included a Sodoku puzzle in the back of the program for those losing focus (genius!!), we were off to The Roasterie to dine and dance the night away. Held in an airport hanger turned coffee roaster, it was a wonderful modern wedding celebration!

Saturday was our last evening in Bloomington, and what better way to capture the beauty of this town then at the Sample Gates?! Made of limestone, they make for a breathtaking entrance to the Indiana University campus or back into downtown Bloomington. We hit the local spots, Nick’s English Hut for a bucket of “Sink the Biz” fries (after those, I was so looking forward to a Monday evening butt kicking by my trainer), followed by Kilroy’s to finish off  the night. Seeing all of the seniors just weeks from graduation, eager for the real world and sad to be leaving their college days behind, filled me with nostalgia. Graduation was such a bittersweet time and I cannot believe it has already been two years.

On a different and less depressing note since it is Friday, I am off to Kansas City this weekend to celebrate a wedding and apologies to anyone who will have seen me in this already, but seeing as how I loved this outfit the first time around, I am putting it on repeat tonight. Oops!

Cafe D’Mongo’s Speakeasy

I wasn’t properly introduced to the host, Larry D’Mongo, but he makes a pretty tasty vodka soda and the live music that can be heard there on a Saturday night just makes a gal want to put on her boogie shoes and shake it. Tucked away downtown on Griswold, this quaint bar first opened in the late 1980′s; was shuttered during Detroit’s recent dark days which lasted a good 20 years, and reopened in 2005 when its astute owner saw a definite upswing in the youthful movement to reestablish downtown Detroit as the hub of the city, rather than the scourge.  It has quickly become a local favorite, with word of mouth the best recommendation. In part because Ryan Gosling has made it his local hangout when in town (hallelujah!), but also because of its living room style…think big winged chairs at tables, soft lighting, and framed pieces including the Detroit Mafia chart above.  Mix in an energetic and vivacious crowd full of young Detroiters, happy to have made their way to this spot. My first trip to Cafe D’Mongo’s wouldn’t have been complete without my long-time friend and dance partner (dating back to kindergarten).

morning routine

Alarm rings. Hit snooze. Ten minutes later, hit snooze again. Debate waking up, but drift off again until snooze jolts me awake. Drag myself out of bed. Take a steaming hot shower in order to finally stop staring at the back of my eyelids. Realize I am way behind schedule. Panic. Throw on easiest outfit. Quickly put together lunch. Rush out the door. Put makeup on, brush hair and throw it into a pony tail, while eating breakfast and driving to work. Grab Starbucks and finally begin the day.

Anyone have similar mornings? Far too often, I find myself too tired and choosing to sleep in instead of forcing myself up and having the luxury to take my time in the morning and start my day a little less stressed. Last week I set my alarm thirty minutes earlier one day, and the results were amazing. Yes, it was difficult to actually get out of bed, but having the time to do the things I enjoy was worth it. Instead of my usual pony tail necessity, I actually had time to make my hair look decent, style an outfit, even do a blog shoot, in addition to enjoying my morning coffee over the Wall Street Journal. Since leaving my business college days behind, it is rare that I take the time to sit down and read a paper. Often times throughout a busy day, I’ll break to catch up on a quick news story or fashion bites from Yahoo or Refinery29 or my favorite blogs, but there is something about holding a crisp paper, hot off the presses. It actually makes me feel a little bit more like an adult (HA!). I’d be lucky if I could keep this up even once a week, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

What does your morning routine look like?

la dolce vita

On Easter Sunday (quite a gloomy one I might add), we finally ventured to La Dolce Vita in the Palmer Park district. I’d been dying to try it, and I’m so glad we did. As you drive around the corner in not the greatest neighborhood, you’d never expect this discreet building to house the most enchanting courtyard and restaurant. Though still in its winter state without the outdoor bar and al fresco seating in play, the courtyard instantly transports you to the middle of Paris with its wrought iron gate, simple signage, and lamp posts that had me looking for the nearest Metro station. Detroit’s nickname  ”Paris of the Midwest” absolutely came to life. Overlooking the restaurant, an ivy covered brick wall brought me back to Juliet’s balcony in Verona, and the interior of the restaurant continued with a similar feel. Simple elegance, decadent and delicious Italian cuisine, and live jazz loud enough to hear without interrupting a conversation completed the experience. I am quite looking forward to spending many warm spring and summer evenings on this patio, sipping cocktails and taking in its beauty. Then it was off to family dinner with my basket of gilded eggs and gluten-free mini carrot cakes in tow.

How did you spend your holiday?

not so mellow yellow

The title of this post is a play on the name of everyone’s favorite Donovan song from the sixties, when sheath dresses and craft cocktails were originally the rage.  That said, I purposefully dressed in the color of sunshine, as I hoped to convince Mother Nature to bring us spring sooner as opposed to later.  Happy Hour is also a time-honored tradition, and one in which I am more than willing to participate.  In the spirit of getting a bit more mellow, we swung by the local Corktown watering hole, Sugar House Craft Cocktails on Tuesday after work.  We sipped on Pimm’s Cups and Roosevelt Park Swizzles, two of their seasonal craft cocktails, while noshing on a charcuterie and cheese board (staples in my life, FYI). The atmosphere takes you back to the 1920′s with its speakeasy style, and the eclectic decor makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into someone’s living room with muted lighting, dark walls, chandeliers, and a plethora of animal heads (moose, deer, elk, take your pick) keeping watch from their various perches (okay, they are a sight you might not see in every living room!).

If you’re ever in the neighborhood, be sure to check out this Detroit gem!

Back to my natural blond self again! Nothing about my Monday was exciting – not even the manic part.  I took a few quick pics in the midst of running errands (i.e. buying a stash of dark chocolate and egg white egg salad from Trader Joe’s to get me through the shortened work week…hallelujah).  As you can see, it’s not really looking like spring in Michigan quite yet and a morning snow shower assured me of that. Tomorrow I’ll be wearing primary brights in the hope of convincing Mother Nature that she can deliver spring around here. Any day now…

I could go on about my love of “The South” for days, but one of the most treasured things about it is our historic home. This 1876  haven was rescued and restored by my mother almost 6 years ago and has become very dear to my family. It’s 13 foot ceilings, traditional southern porches, poured glass windows, fireplaces and chandeliers in almost every room, and original heart pine floors maintain the charm and elements every southern home should have, while my mom’s modern interior touches give it a fresh feeling. It is amazing to think just how small a role we play in this home’s long life and when there, I often find I am curious to know what it was before us.

The back porch (pictured above) is one of my favorite places to relax, kick back with a glass of white wine, listen to the palm trees rustle, and drift into a calm, serene state. What are your favorite places for relaxation?

Decked out in my latest “Off the Runway” steal from a Saturday spent shopping (see post here), I headed to a dear friend’s wedding on the campus of Spring Hill College, where my formative years were so wisely spent!  I had forgotten just how beautiful the Avenue of Oaks can be when spring is in full swing down in Alabama. The brightest pink azaleas line the main road through campus, flanked by a canopy of two hundred year-old live oaks with branches that fall gracefully to the ground. It is incredibly scenic and graduating on this very spot made for magical memories.

After a quick stop to bask in its glory and snap a few shots, we were off to the ceremony. It was so special to see these two people, madly in love, take their next steps in life together. An incredible wedding was made even better by the sight of my dear friend, Emily, floating down the isle toward her groom with a grin from ear to ear…and that grin never left her face the entire evening. I could not be more happy for Emily and Josh and it was a great start to this year’s wedding season!

southern roots

southern rootsPeplum top: ASOS (Summer). Pants: Gap. Heels: Zara (last Spring). Sunnies: Westward \\ Leaning No. 2. Jewelry: Michael Kors Watch; David Yurman Bracelet and Ring.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of returning to one of my favorite places – Mobile, Alabama. My love for the South is as deep and strong as the roots that give life to the giant old magnolia on which I’m seated, as well as the several hundred year old live oaks that line the city’s streets and provide for the most picturesque setting. The weekend was incredible…filled with family, friends, a beautiful wedding, exploration, reminiscing, and of course, southern fare. Every time I go back, it’s a wonderful reminder of my college years and time spent in a place that warms my heart at the very thought of it. There will be more posts to come as I just couldn’t get enough of this perfect southern town I call my second home.
